Katine

Sometimes we just do not appreciate how lucky we are in this country. In the Katine area of Uganda, for instance, a recent survey found that almost two fifths of households had to walk two hours or more just to get water. Half of the households surveyed cannot safely dispose of their faeces because they have no toilet. Only 5% of the households surveyed said they had eaten enough in the last 12 months. Malaria is a significant problem in Katine, including amongst children. There are not enough mosquito nets and the survey raised concerns about inappropriate treatment for those with malaria.

The contrast with this country is stark. Does it need to be like this? No! The Guardian newspaper, in conjunction with the African Medical and Research Foundation (Amref) and Barclays Bank, is trying to do something to improve the lives of the people of Katine. These organisations are involved in a three year project. They do need support though and the project is short of donations with the actual amount given falling well below the target.

It seems that this really is something worth supporting. It really can make a difference and hopefuly it will. More information on Katine is available on the Guardian web site at http://www.guardian.co.uk/katine.
