Elections and co-options

Elections in May 20011 resulted in all but two of the previous Lydford Parish Councillors being replaced. A separate item covers the elections and gives a useful summary showing just how bad was the record of the previous council. It was hoped that the new intake of councillors would result in some improvement. It is early days yet but they are not off to a good start

The parish council report in the August edition of the Parish Magazine included the following:-

A Parish Councillor vacancy had been advertised last month and we received one application for co-option.

Where precisely was this vacancy advertised? There is no mention of a resignation in the May or June parish council minutes. The June and July parish council reports in the Parish Magazine make no mention of a vacancy. The July minutes record the co-option of a new councillor.

One of the criticisms of the old council was that it acted more like a private members club than a modern democratic body. By failing to properly advertise this councillor vacancy the new council seems to have no better appreciation of democratic principles than the old.
